Is MikroTik better than TP-Link? For a simple home connection that nobody will ever touch again, TP-Link is often the easier choice, and we will happily say so. For anything that needs control — two internet lines, a guest hotspot, VPN back to head office, a camp, a WISP, a network you will grow — MikroTik gives you far more for the money. We supply both on our counter in Bur Dubai, so this is the comparison we give customers who ask us straight.
The short answer
- Choose TP-Link for plug-and-play home Wi-Fi, a basic unmanaged switch, or when the person maintaining it is not technical.
- Choose MikroTik for offices, shops with card machines, multi-site businesses, ISPs, hotspots and anything that needs failover, VPN or bandwidth control.
- The real difference is the software. Every MikroTik, from the cheapest to the biggest, runs the same RouterOS with the same features. TP-Link splits features across consumer, Omada business and other product lines.

MikroTik vs TP-Link side by side
| MikroTik | TP-Link | |
|---|---|---|
| Setup for a beginner | Quick Set covers the basics; advanced settings need learning | Very easy, guided app setup |
| Software | One operating system, RouterOS, on every device | Different firmware across consumer, Omada business and other ranges |
| Two internet lines and failover | Built in on every router | Available on selected business models |
| VPN (WireGuard, IPsec) | Built in, site-to-site and remote access | Depends on the model |
| Hotspot login and per-user limits | Built in | Mainly through the Omada business range |
| ISP features (BGP, PPPoE server, queues) | Built in | Not its focus |
| Central Wi-Fi management | CAPsMAN, built into RouterOS | Omada controller or Deco app |
| Best for | Offices, multi-site, ISPs, camps, hotels, power users | Homes and small set-and-forget networks |
The real gap is the software
When people compare the two they usually compare the box: ports, Wi-Fi speed, price. Those are close. The difference shows up six months later, when the business wants something new. With MikroTik the answer is almost always already in the router: add a second internet line and fail over, put the guests on their own network with a speed cap, connect the warehouse by VPN, see which device is using the bandwidth. The same skills work on a small hEX and on a CCR in an ISP’s rack.
That flexibility has a cost: RouterOS takes some learning, and a badly configured MikroTik is worse than a well-configured anything. If nobody on your side will look after it, either keep the setup simple with Quick Set or have an installer configure it once. Our RouterOS explainer is a good first read, and the first-login guide covers the setup basics.
And Ubiquiti? If you want MikroTik-level control with a TP-Link-level easy app, UniFi sits in between. Read MikroTik vs Ubiquiti for that comparison.
Which country is MikroTik from, and which is TP-Link from?
It is one of the most searched questions about both brands, so here are the plain facts. MikroTik is a Latvian company, founded in Riga in 1996, and still designs its hardware and RouterOS there. TP-Link was founded in Shenzhen, China, the same year. Its global business is now run by TP-Link Systems Inc., headquartered in Irvine, California, which states that it is fully separate from the China-based TP-LINK Technologies that serves mainland China. For most UAE buyers the more practical questions are software updates, warranty and local support — buy from an official channel and keep the firmware current, whichever brand you choose.
