A UniFi access point listed at 30 percent below every Dubai shop is almost never a bargain. It is usually grey market: genuine Ubiquiti hardware bought in another region and shipped in without the UAE distribution channel, warranty or regulatory approval. Sometimes it is not genuine at all. Three things that can arrive in the box
Genuine, UAE channel. Sold through Ubiquiti’s authorised distribution for the Middle East, carrying the regional warranty and TDRA-compliant radio settings. The channel point matters more than people expect. A US-region access point may transmit on channels that are not permitted here and at higher power than UAE rules allow. For a home that is a nuisance risk; for a hotel, camp or ISP that gets inspected, it is a compliance failure.
How to verify a Ubiquiti unit is genuine
- Check the seller first. Ubiquiti publishes its authorised distributors and resellers by region. A seller who cannot say which distributor they buy from is a grey seller.
- Insist on a UAE VAT invoice with the seller’s TRN. It is the simplest filter there is.
- Compare the MAC address on the label, on the box, and in the UniFi or airOS interface. All three must match. Cloned units often show a MAC that belongs to a different product family.
- Look at the packaging. Genuine Ubiquiti boxes have crisp printing, a matching serial and MAC sticker, and sealed accessory bags. Blurry print and mismatched fonts are a warning sign.
- Adopt it. A genuine UniFi device adopts into the controller and pulls firmware normally. A clone typically fails adoption or reports a wrong model.
- Check the country in the wireless settings. After adoption, the available 5 GHz channels should match the UAE list. If you cannot select them, the unit is region-locked for another market.
The price test
Genuine Ubiquiti sold through the UAE channel has a fairly narrow price band, because resellers all buy from the same distributor.
