UniFi Protect is Ubiquiti’s camera system: PoE cameras, a recorder, and the same UniFi app that already runs the WiFi. For villas, shops, warehouses and offices in Dubai it has become the natural upgrade from cheap DVR kits, because there are no monthly fees, footage stays on your own recorder, and the cameras sit on the same switches as your access points. This is an honest look at what UniFi Protect does well, where it falls short, and what a real Dubai installation costs.
How UniFi Protect works
Every camera is powered and connected by a single ethernet cable from a PoE switch. Footage records to a UniFi recorder on site, either a dedicated UNVR or the recorder built into a Dream Machine Pro. You view live and recorded video in the UniFi Protect app on your phone from anywhere, with motion and smart detections (people and vehicles) sent as notifications. There is no cloud subscription; remote access is included.

What UniFi Protect does well
- No subscription. Unlike consumer cloud cameras, there is nothing to pay after the hardware. Over five years this alone pays for the recorder.
- Footage stays in the UAE, on your premises. Relevant for businesses with privacy obligations and for anyone uncomfortable with video in someone else’s cloud.
- One app for WiFi and cameras. The same dashboard, the same switches, the same user accounts.
- Image quality. The G4 Pro’s 4K sensor and optical zoom are noticeably better than typical AED 300 CCTV cameras, especially at night.
- Smart detection without a cloud. Person and vehicle detection runs on the recorder.
Where it falls short
- Price per camera. A G4 Pro costs what a four-camera DVR kit does. UniFi Protect is a quality decision, not a budget one.
- Ubiquiti cameras only. Protect does not record third-party cameras. If you have an existing Hikvision or Dahua installation, you replace it or run two systems.
- Storage planning. 4K footage fills drives quickly. For 30 days of retention on 8 or more cameras, use the UNVR with large surveillance-grade drives rather than the single drive in a Dream Machine Pro.
- Heat. Cameras mounted in direct Gulf sun should be shaded under eaves or hoods, and recorders belong in an air-conditioned room, not a garage.

Can UniFi Protect record other brands of camera?
No. UniFi Protect works only with Ubiquiti cameras. Existing third-party cameras must stay on their own recorder or be replaced.
How many cameras can a Dream Machine Pro record?
